SEASIDE, Calif. —
On the Central Coast, dozens of people would normally march throughout the street in honor of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, continued fight and how far the country has come. In a pandemic, those activities had to adjust.
It’s not a day off, it’s a day on for service. For some people, MLK Day starts with serving their community.
“It’s the least we can do is spend our time and give back to the community. It doesn’t cost anything it’s helping each one of us,” Shunika Johnson, clean-up volunteer.
Each person, honoring and celebrating their own way safely from a distance.
On MLK Day, a group with the National Naval Officers Association, along with people living in Seaside started off the holiday morning cleaning up Seaside. Doing community service on MLK Day has become a normal activity for some in recent years.
