Symposium Summary

President’s Message

My most sincere thanks to all the attendees to the 47th Annual Leadership, Professional Development and Training Symposium.  The energy and passion that was evident in every session made it one of the best I have seen.  Your participation as a mentee, mentor, coach, or advocate for your Shipmates is what made it all worthwhile. NNOA is on the move and our momentum from this year’s symposium is great.  There are follow-up meetings in the works at various levels in the Sea Services and our other partner organizations.

From now until our next Symposium in Portsmouth, Virginia I am declaring the year, “Year of the Mustang”. We will feature this theme at our website and in social media, and also stories about a few of our Prior Enlisted men and women of NNOA who have helped make our Sea Services great.  I was raised by LDOs and CWOs as an Ensign on USS LONG BEACH (CGN 9) and revere their professionalism, knowledge, and drive to succeed.  Please join me in reaching out to our Mustang Officers to let them know how much we value their service.

LCDR HaskinsYour NNOA is on the move and now is the right time to help take it to the next level.  The benefits for active and reserve officers continues to be seen in the networking, career development and mentoring opportunities that NNOA affords.  What NNOA needs to succeed is the active participation of our retired and civilian members.  Your experience and relative stability that retired NNOA members brings to our organization is essential. Whether it be at the National Level on the Board, serving on one of the Standing Committees, or serving at the Chapter Level, your NNOA needs you!  Take Lieutenant Commander Jim Haskins for example, pictured with me at this year’s symposium.  He coordinated our volunteers and did a fabulous job. You can’t be too young or too old or too busy to help…just willing to serve and still with a passion to make our Sea Services, PHS, NOAA and Merchant Marines better.

Three actions that I ask you to consider:

  1. Checkout the openings in our Jobs Page
  2. Volunteer for Symposium production, planning and execution
  3. Link up with the chapter or interest group in your local area

Thank you again for being a part of NNOA and helping to keep our Sea Services strong.

Very respectfully,

SM Harris
