2021 CNO Naval History Essay Contest

Here is a chance to stretch your intellectual muscles and expand your CV.

The 2021 CNO Essay contest is now underway.  Members of the Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Merchant Marine are eligible to submit papers.

The CNO’s intent is to engage and leverage the intellectual talents of the members of the U.S. maritime services (i.e., the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard as well as the Merchant Marine) to provide insights and catalyze discussion on how to establish and maintain maritime superiority in an era of great power competition.

The rules for entrant eligibility in both categories have changed.  Essays will be accepted from entrants qualified in the Professional Category or the Rising Category.

a.  Professional Category:
       (1) Historians, professors, history curators, archivists, and persons with history-related doctoral degrees;
       (2) Authors of books on naval history (not including self-published works); or
       (3) Civilians who have published articles in an established historical or naval journal or magazine.

b.  Rising Category:  Those that do not fall in the Professional Category and are either:
       (1) Active duty, reservists, veterans, and federal civilian personnel of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine; or
       (2) Members of foreign militaries that have orders and are serving in an official billet in one of the above Services.

There is also a cash prize (courtesy of USNI). (Note: cash prizes of co-authors will be split equally):
       (1) First Place – $5,000 (both categories);
       (2) Second Place – $2,500 (both categories);
       (3) Third Place – $1,500 (Rising Category only).

Women, Peace, and Security: Cross-regional challenges and opportunities – Dec 2

CNA online discussion on 2 December at 1100-1200 EST about “Women, Peace, and Security: Cross-regional challenges and opportunities.”

We’ll examine developments in the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda by exploring issues and themes across Africa, Asia, and Europe. Speakers will discuss WPS as it relates to a range of security challenges across these regions and will then consider opportunities for cooperation with allies and partners.

Congratulations to LT Tanesha Green-Baker – 2020 Blacks In Government (BIG) Meritorious Service Award Recipient

LT Tanesha Green-BakerNNOA is extremely proud of our very own, LT Tanesha Green-Baker, the Coast Guard’s recipient of the 2020 Blacks in Government (BIG) Meritorious Service Award. She continues to distinguished herself as a leader of diversity and inclusion initiatives across the sea services, including her role as the Chair of our JO Advisory Panel.

While balancing her demanding primary duties as a strategic intelligence analyst at the Intelligence Coordination Center (ICC), Washington, D.C, she spearheaded several outreach events including two College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) recruitment engagements at recognized Historically Black Colleges and Universities. During these events, she promoted Coast Guard career opportunities to a diverse audience of more than 500 current and prospective college students. Serving as a White House Social Aide at 17 high visibility Presidential events, she represented the Coast Guard, positively engaging with more than 6,000 guests and senior government leaders. In addition to her primary duties at ICC, LT Green-Baker volunteered to chair her unit’s Leadership & Diversity Advisory Council; in this capacity, she led monthly leadership conferences and discussed climate concerns with senior leaders. LT Green-Baker was also recognized with the 2019 National Naval Officers Association (NNOA) Distinguished Service Award for her numerous contributions and exceptional performance.

She will be officially recognized during the BIG Virtual Military Meritorious Service Award Ceremony on Wednesday, September 9, 2020.

Women’s History Month 2020 – Monterey Chapter Celebration

The Monterey Chapter of the National Naval Officers Association (NNOA) will be celebrating Women’s History Month in March 2020! This year marks the Centennial Celebration of Women’s Suffrage (Ratification of the 19th Amendment). There will be light refreshments served and comments from NPS President, VADM Rondeau and guest speaker Julie Packard. Ms. Packard is Executive Director and Vice Chair of the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Board of Trustees. Her biography can be viewed here.

OSD 2020-2021 Fellowship Program

SUBJECT:  Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) Sustainment 2020-2021
Fellowship Program

1.  The nomination process is now open for the 2020-2021 Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) Sustainment Fellowship Program open to all Services.  Please read the attached Training Agreement.

2.  The year-long, on-site, hands-on leadership and management development
program is designed to enhance career development of mid-level logistics,
environmental, energy, acquisition, and engineering professionals, military
O-4/O-5 and civilian GS-13/GS-14, who have demonstrated significant
potential for advancement and greater responsibility in their career field.
Participants will remain assigned to their parent organization.  All program-related expenses are covered by the parent organization in which the applicant is assigned at the time of nomination.

3.  OSD Fellows will be integrated into one of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense offices  that span diverse sets of responsibilities that include life cycle logistics and sustainment, facility and
installation management, supply chain, operational contract support, installation energy and energy sources, environmental practices, real property management and policy, transportation policy, operational contact support, vendor vetting, legislative strategy, strategic communication, and
acquisition program management.

4.  For a nomination, provide the following six items into one PDF document.  Selection announcement will follow in early April 2020 with program beginning in July 2020.
– Resume (five page maximum, including references)
– Three most recent performance appraisals or military performance reports
– Signed copy of training agreement (template attached)
– Letter of endorsement by the nomination Service or Agency GO/FO/SES
– One page personal statement justifying favorable consideration for the
program
– One page biography
