Promotion Ceremony CAPT (SEL) Washington Johnson, CHC, USN

On Monday October 8, 2018, a promotion ceremony was held for CDR Washington Johnson, CHC, USN to the rank of Captain. The ceremony was held at The North American Division of Seventh-Day Adventists (Amphitheater) in Columbia, Maryland. The presiding official for the ceremony was Lieutenant General Reynold Hoover, USA, Deputy Commander, U. S. Element, North American Aerospace Defense Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. Guest speaker was Rear Admiral (Ret) Barry Black, CHC, USN (Former Chief of Chaplains) and current Chaplain, of the U. S. Senate. Other dignitaries in attendance included Rear Admiral (Ret) Darold Bigger, CHC, USN, Deputy Chief of Chaplains for Reserve Matters, Daniel R. Jackson, President, North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists, Dr. Robert Johnson III, Chancellor, UMass Dartmouth, CAPT Thomas Walcott, CHC, USN, Chaplain of the U.S. Coast Guard and CAPT (Ret) Thomas Abernethy, USN, President of the Washington, DC Chapter of the National Naval Officers Association (DCNNOA). CAPT Washington was joined in the ceremony by his wife Dr. Joyce Johnson, his son Washington Johnson III (a student at Oakwood University), his mother Dr. Mildred Johnson, other siblings, family members, friends and colleagues from DCNNOA.

    

Following the promotion ceremony a reception was held in the reception hall of the Amphitheater.

Best wishes and a “Hearty Well Done” is forwarded to CAPT Washington Johnson and his family from the Executive Board and members of the Washington, DC Chapter of the National Naval Officers Association for accomplishing this significant achievement in his career!

Since 1790, the Coast Guard has been on the frontline protecting the United States and its resources domestically and abroad from all threats and hazards that affect the maritime domain. In the 21st century, the threat vectors have expanded beyond fighting the war on terrorism, protecting marine fisheries, interdicting narco-traffickers and illegal migrants, prevention operations, and saving lives in peril on the high seas. Continual improvements in computer technology, specifically decryption (“hacking”) software, has invoked a new threat that requires the Coast Guard to add maritime cyber security to its mission set considering 90 percent of the goods used by Americans are transported by sea.  Read More…

On 17 August 1988, the 100th Congress approved and President Ronald Reagan signed Public Law 100-402.  This expanded Hispanic Heritage Week into a 31-day observance from September 15th through October 15th, which is recognized as “National Hispanic Heritage Month.”
