On Monday October 8, 2018, a promotion ceremony was held for CDR Washington Johnson, CHC, USN to the rank of Captain. The ceremony was held at The North American Division of Seventh-Day Adventists (Amphitheater) in Columbia, Maryland. The presiding official for the ceremony was Lieutenant General Reynold Hoover, USA, Deputy Commander, U. S. Element, North American Aerospace Defense Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. Guest speaker was Rear Admiral (Ret) Barry Black, CHC, USN (Former Chief of Chaplains) and current Chaplain, of the U. S. Senate. Other dignitaries in attendance included Rear Admiral (Ret) Darold Bigger, CHC, USN, Deputy Chief of Chaplains for Reserve Matters, Daniel R. Jackson, President, North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists, Dr. Robert Johnson III, Chancellor, UMass Dartmouth, CAPT Thomas Walcott, CHC, USN, Chaplain of the U.S. Coast Guard and CAPT (Ret) Thomas Abernethy, USN, President of the Washington, DC Chapter of the National Naval Officers Association (DCNNOA). CAPT Washington was joined in the ceremony by his wife Dr. Joyce Johnson, his son Washington Johnson III (a student at Oakwood University), his mother Dr. Mildred Johnson, other siblings, family members, friends and colleagues from DCNNOA.
Following the promotion ceremony a reception was held in the reception hall of the Amphitheater.
