STEM Committee

Joe McMahon is a retired Naval Flight Officer and current government civil servant serving as the U. S. Navy’s Echelon II Command Information Officer (CIO) for the Naval Safety Command since 2012. Prior to joining the Naval Safety Command, he served as the National Information Technology Transformation Coordinator, and Team Lead for Capital Planning and Investment Controls at the Bureau of Land Management in Washington, DC, and IT Portfolio Manager for Warfighter systems at US Joint Forces Command, Norfolk.

In 2021, he concluded 10 years and three consecutive elected terms as Chairman of the Engineering Advisory Board for Norfolk State University. He has been recognized by multiple members of congress for his STEM efforts, and in 2010 received the Congressional Special Certificate of Recognition for “Outstanding and invaluable service to the community” for his innovative approach to STEM outreaches for autonomous unmanned systems.

He is a graduate of the Navy BOOST program class of 1985 and was commissioned via the Morehouse NROTC in 1989. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) committee for the National Naval Officers Association (NNOA).
