Commander Michael Files is from Austin, TX and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science. He holds a Master of Science degree in Management (International) from Troy University.
After commissioning, he reported to Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Marianas in Guam as the Assistant Protocol Officer and Guam Liaison Officer. In 2000, after completing Surface Warfare Division Officer School in Newport, RI, CDR Files reported to the USS
GERMANTOWN (LSD 42) in Sasebo, Japan, as the Machinery Division Officer. During this tour, he was designated a Surface Warfare Officer and completed several deployments in support of regional humanitarian assistance and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. CDR Files’ next assignment was as the Surface Operations Officer for Mine Countermeasure Squadron THREE in Ingleside, TX. He deployed with Mine Warfare Readiness Group FOUR in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. During this tour, he re-designated as a Human Resources Professional and then transferred to Navy Recruiting District New York in Long Island, NY as the Enlisted Programs Officer.
In 2006, he transferred to Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific in San Diego, CA as Head, Military Resources Management. While there, he transitioned to the Full Time Support community. After this tour, he transferred to Chief of Naval Personnel in Arlington, VA and served as the Deputy Executive Assistant to the Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Manpower, Personnel, Training and Education)/N1B. In 2015, he took command of Navy Operational Support Center Battle Creek in Battle Creek, MI. Upon completion of his command tour,
CDR Files reported to Office of Naval Research as the Operational Support Officer. Prior to assuming the duties as the Executive Officer for Navy Recruiting District San Antonio, he served as the Reserve Manpower Manager for OPNAV N12. CDR Files has completed two individual augmentation assignments; United Nations Military Observer for United Nations Mission to Ethiopia and Eritrea and Military Staff Officer for United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti.
His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), United Nations Medal (two awards) and other unit, personal awards and citations.
